Wintermission

December 30, 2025

It feels an odd time, this week between Christmas Day and New Years Day. Do you feel it as well? It feels like an intermission, between acts. A wintermission, we could call it.

I like this quote from an unknown source, “Life is about the in-between moments. … Sometimes we get so caught up in the big moments and big chapters of our lives, we can forget so much of the greatness lies in the day-to-day, in between moments.”

One of the several apparently well-known Bill Crawfords (not sure which one) said, “The most powerful times in our lives can be the times between times, or life’s transtitions that give us the opportunity to choose.”

Life rolls on so quickly. Sometimes we don’t recognize the importance of those times of transition. Perhaps we don’t even realize that’s what they are, we just rush to the next thing. The period after high school or college before the next big life-step. The post-retirement months, when everything feels up-ended. The day the last child leaves home. Or the last pet dies. The time between leaders of nations or organizations. The period after quitting a long position, either volunteer or paid.

The ‘now what?’ time, we could also call it.

I love the classic Simon and Garfunkel song (59th St. Bridge). It provides this gentle advice:

“Slow down, ya move too fast, gotta make the mornin’ last. Just kickin’ down the cobblestones, lookin’ for fun and feelin’ groovy…” It carries on, “Hello lamppost, what’cha knowing, I’ve come to watch your flowers growin.'” Then on it goes to say this important thing: “I got no deeds to do, no promises to keep…”

In between times. Between deeds and promises. Seeds and flowers. Cobblestones and lampposts.

So let us consider–what important choices is life giving us the opportunity to consider, in this in-between time?

I have a few. They’ll require sitting in a prayerful mood with, not a lamppost, but perhaps a candle. And there’s no cobblestones where I live, but lots and lots of snow-covered streets.

And chocolate and tea.

Much love,

Kathleen
